The first GSM Android 2.0 handset from Motorola is expected to heat the European markets this December. It’s the Motorola Milestone QWERTY slider and has been released under a different name as the Motorola Droid in the US with just a slight difference – the US edition under Verizon won’t get multitouch capability even if both uses capacitive technology.

Another difference lies in the GPS feature. The Droid comes pre-loaded with Google Maps while the European version comes with Motorola’s own Motonav which has the same spoken turn-by-turn navigation and mapping feature. Other than these differences, both smartphones have identical hardware features.

Availability

Italy and Germany will get it first in time for Christmas and other EU countries to follow. It’s not sure if UK markets will get it before the year is out. The O2 Germany web site indicates a contract-free price of €481 which certainly puts it in the affordable range of flagship smartphones.

Flagship Features

Motorola is hoping to bring back its glory days as a mobile phone leader with this remarkable flagship. It packs high end features at a price that’s definitely friendlier than many top class smartphones in the market.

Conclusion

The Motorola Milestone/Droid smartphone will certainly be a major milestone for the company. If anything can turn around Motorola, this is it. At a very reasonable price tag, this is one handset that combines the versatility of flagship phones like the HTC Hero with the sophistication of a Nokia N97 housed in an elegant all-metal case that feels very solid in the hands. No other full QWERTY slider touchscreen smartphone can touch it with the value proposition it brings to the market.

With so many Motorola Milestone contracts on offer it can be hard to know which to go for. Moby1 can help by comparing all the mobile deals on offer, and they also have many phone reviews.

Q: I just got the new Moto Verizon Droid and I would like to put iTunes library onto Droid to replace my iPhone. Does anyone know how to transfer iTunes music TV shows movies to Droid? I’ve already tried Motorola Media Link….didnt work, I also want to transfer iPod music to Droid Milestone, any help?A: It is the DRM (digital rights management) and media formats to blame since Motorola Droid Milestone CLIQ Rival only support non-DRM .mp3 .aac .wma .ogg .wav music and .3gp .mp4 video files; while .m4p music and .m4v novie from iTunes have DRM license protection — the same situation with the .wma music and .wmv video movie from other online store like Windows Media Centre, Napster, Rhapsody, Nokia Music Store, Spiralfrog, Bearshare, eMusic, Puretracks, MusicGiants, CinemaNow, Movielink, Amazon Unbox, as well as the Microsoft Zune MarketPlace.Part 1: Transfer iTunes music movie to Droid Milestone CLIQ with Motorola Media Link Motorola Media Link is a good application to transfer iTunes music movie to Droid Milestone CLIQ, but it cant support DRM-protected files as MML’s statement — that explains why you cant use Media Link to transfer iTunes music to Droid Milestone. Sync iTunes music movie to Droid Milestone CLIQ (MML only fits these two Moto smartphones) is a easy Drag & Drop job. 1. Mount your Motorla AnDroid Milestone phone Micro SD card to make sure Media Link can recognize it. 2. Connect Motorla AnDroid Milestone phone to computer. 3. Motorola Media Link will automatically locate music video files sourced from iTunes 4. Setup your music library via the ‘SETTINGS’ tab then select ‘Music’ to configure your music source. 5. Select the files you want to transfer, hold mouse and drag over phone icon, then transfer iTunes to Droid Milestone done.Part 2: Transfer iTunes DRM’ed m4p music m4v video Amazon wma wmv files to Droid Milestone To sync DRM’ed iTunes m4p music m4v video Amazon wma wmv files to Droid Milestone, a 3rd party DRM Removal Software is a must-have tool to strip license protection and convert files to Droid Milestone compatible formats. 1. Free download this DRM Removal Software, install and luanch it, the default settings work well with your PC, you don’t need to make anymore configeration. 2. When come to the main interface, you can directly drag-drop the DRM-protected source media files (.m4p .wma music amd .m4v .wmv video movie) to the conversion window, or hit the top-left ‘Add’ button to import the target files. Since Droid Milestone CLIQ play MP4 best with 848×480 resolution, H.264 codec, 1500kbps, AAC 48KHz 160Kbps, you can find all the parametres needed on ‘Settings’ board, like Bit Rate, Resolution, Aspect Ratio, and Frame Rate as well. 3. When finish the preceding 2 steps, hit ‘Start’ button lower-right on the main window, when conversion done, you can freely transfer iTunes music movie to Motorola Droid Milestone CLIQ. (1). Connect Droid Milestone to a computer via USB cable (2). ‘My Computer’ -> Removable Disk icon -> Click to access the Memory SD Card (3). Drag and drop the converted files into the right folder of the Memory CardPart 3: Convert DVD movie to Motorola Droid Milestone CLIQ Rival Sometimes you may want to play DVD movie on Motorola Droid Milestone CLIQ Rival but dont know how to convert DVD movie to Motorola Droid Milestone. Here this all-in-one DVD Ripper + DRM Removal program for Windows can help to remove copyright protection, split DVD movie to clips, and convert DVD to Droid Milestone compatible audio & video formats. The DVD to Droid Milestone converting process is the same easy and simple as illustrated above, here I just saved it.Hints: You might also like to check for even more “How-To” transfer the DRM protected music, video, movie to media devices like iPod, iPhone, Zune, PSP, Xbox 360, PS3, Creative Zen, Archos, Sansa, Iriver, Samsung, Cowon, Sony Walkman, as well as mobile phones like HTC, Blackberry, Sony Erricsson, LG, Nokia, Motorola, etc.

Most people will recognize this as the Motorola that Verizon will carry in the US. But on the other side of the Atlantic, people will know this as the Motorola Milestone. Either version is Motorola’s first GSM phone running on the latest Google Android 2.0 Éclair operating system.

At least that’s what it will be once it gets released in Europe this December starting with Italy and Germany. The O2 German site has it priced at a SIM-free €481 but rumour has it that it will be closer to €400-€450 once released.  The sales kit is expected to come with an 8GB microSD card, 16GB in the US.

Droid – Milestone Differences

While sharing the same hardware and design, there are some differences between the US Droid and the European Milestone versions. The former gets the latest Google Maps and has its multitouch feature on its capacitive touchscreen turned off while the latter has the Motorola MOTONAV GPS application that does the same spoken turn-by-turn GPS guidance and sports a multitouch capacitive touchscreen similar to what the iPhone 3Gs has.

In fact, were it not for the difference in form factor, the Motorola Milestone/Droid is the closest if not the best rival the iPhone could have had. The new Android 2.0 seems to even up the functionality score with what the iPhone can do. While it’s heftier due to the real glass on the display and an all-metal body at 165g over the iPhone’s 139g, size-wise, they’re quite similar when the Milestone’s QWERTY slider is closed.

Great Value High end Features.

Its feature set can easily dislodge many flagship smartphones in the market. It sports a massive 3.7” wide-VGA capacitive touchscreen with multitouch (for Europe) and a brilliant display that puts to shame the AMOLED display on the Samsung i8910 HD.

You can pretty much do on its screen what you can do on the iPhone: double tap to zoom in or out as well as pin or squeeze your fingers to zoom Web pages, photos and maps and spread out to zoom out.  There’s no other mobile phone other than the iPhone that can do that at this time.

Another outstanding feature comes from its imaging function. It has a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with dual LED flash that also supports wide-VGA recording at 24 fps frame rates. The new Android OS now has flash support where before, mobile phones running Android didn’t have any flash on their cameras.

And of course, it’s a quad band GSM and twin band UMTS phone with HSPA data connectivity for a no-wait surfing and downloading on the net. WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR are there for wireless data connectivity. Its CPU is the ARM Cortex A8 clocked at 550 MHz and is touted to be as powerful as the one used by the iPhone 3Gs.

Battery life is 6.5 hours talk time and 14 days standby time from its 1400 mAh lithium-ion battery – typical of most other flagship handsets. There’s the usual coteries of hardware features you can expect from a top act smartphone – 3.5mm headphone jack, microUSB support, microSD slot for up to 32GB, stereo Fm radio with RDS, GPS, accelerometers and capable multimedia players.

High Marks All Around

At its price point, nothing comes close to the Milestone. In terms of value for the money, no flagship mobile phones can hold a candle to it. Motorola may have indeed created a defining milestone in its phone-making history with this. At the very least, it has redefined what a high value high performing flagship smartphone is. It comes right in time to update the Christmas shopping list. And there’s no Nokia or HTC on it, just a Motorola Milestone.

The Motorola Milestone is one of the world’s best smart phones. Not only does it have amazing technical specs, but it runs on the Android software that is produced by Google. This means that the phone is completely open to new applications as well as changes in the software. This allows people to change whatever they want about the phone, other than some basic shell functionality.

One of the best features of the Motorola Milestone is that you can use it at any 802.11 b/g connection. Without this feature, you would have to use the slower cellular network all of the time. While the cellular networks of the United Kingdom hold up most of the time, they can be somewhat slow especially in populated urban centers like London. Now, all you have to do is connect to the wireless connection and be able to handle all of your data seamlessly.

The Motorola Milestone is not going to be available through any carrier in the United Kingdom before the end of the year. This is most likely due to the fact that all of the carriers have already chosen the phones that they are going to push for the holiday season. However, you can still purchase the phone and use it within the United Kingdom. It is currently being sold by Expansys, an online company which is offering a version of the phone for 450 pounds, plus taxes. This is quite high for a mobile phone, but well deserved for a phone of the magnitude of the Milestone.

In addition to all of the other wonderful features, Motorola wants you to pay for its MOTONAV service. This is a service that will help motorists find their way from point A to point B. It has turn by turn directions as well as several other trials. A trial is included with each and every Milestone so that the individual user can choose whether or not to continue subscribing.

After you have taken care of the navigation package, you might want to look further under the hood. The phone itself is quite similar to its sister, the Verizon Wireless Droid back in the United States. There are very few changes between the few phones, except for one major hardware and several software changes. First off, you have the Quad Band GSM radio inside the Milestone while the Droid supports a CDMA radio chip. Also, the Milestone is currently sporting Android 2.0. This allows users to use multi-touch, something that the Droid has not yet had enabled. The multi-tocuh feature has been on the wish list of many users for years and years. Thankfully, it is now open on this phone and will be included on all phones with Android 2.0 or above.

The Motorola Milestone is more closely related to the Droid from Verizon Wireless than you might think. While the Milestone is being launched in the United Kingdom through Expansys, the Droid actually has a carrier to support it in the United States. This has led to high sales and even customer praise about how well the Droid works. While many consumers in the United Kingdom have been unable to afford the high cost of the Motorola Milestone which is currently only available through an online store.

You are finally able to zip through the web at 3G speeds and even use Flash 10. This is a breakthrough for mobile phones, as many of them have never supported flash in the past. Just being able to watch flash video such as Youtube has only been possible on the iPhone, and a select few phones until this phone has been released. You can also navigate around the 400,000 pixel screen using double tap, zoom and pinch techniques that many Android phones have been unable to use for years. Thanks to the Milestone including Android 2.0 straight out of the box you are now able to use multi-touch, one of the most requested features for the Android OS update!

Using Google on your Milestone is easy as pie! You no longer have to go to Google, you can simply search and get the results that you want right from your phone. Who would waste valuable time by bringing along a separate digital camera on your vacation, right? Now that you have a 5.0 mega pixel digital camera included with your phone, there is no reason for you to bring the extra digital camera along. It simply would take up more space and lessen the amount of fun that you are having with your new phone.

The Android Marketplace is the clearinghouse for thousands of different apps. Whether you want something to relax with or need an application that can help you keep track of stocks on the go, the Android Marketplace has it for you. Also, the development of applications is quite easy and getting your applications into the marketplace takes next to no time at all!
